I love to knit.

I learned to knit from my grandma on Sunday afternoons after dinner. For years, I thought I was pretty good at it. I would knit at home while watching TV with my family, happily making project after project. 

Then I joined a couple of knitting guilds—and discovered how much more there was to learn! I picked up new techniques, learned how to choose projects that matched my skills, and became a much better knitter.

Today, there are so many wonderful ways to learn knitting online. Videos, tutorials, and other digital resources can be incredibly helpful. But I’ve learned that they can’t completely replace learning with another person—especially for kids.

Learning to knit from the internet can be tough when you’re just starting out. Sometimes you need someone right beside you to show you how to hold the needles, fix a mistake, or simply say, “Yep, you’re doing it right!”

And what if your grandma doesn’t knit?

Answering that question has become part of my mission!  My goal is to find the right balance between in-person instruction and multimedia resources—combining the encouragement and connection of learning together with the convenience of videos and other digital tools.

Because knitting is about more than making something with yarn and needles. It’s also about becoming resilient when we are frustrated, fail to achieve our goals, and make mistakes. It's about understanding quality work by making something we use. It's a new way to understand math. And most importantly of all, knitting gives us a sense of belonging!
